A Mid 18th Century Mother-of-Pearl Fan, the monture carved, pierced and gilded, with thin mother-of-pearl backing to the gorge, where gilded figures in 18th century costume are assembled. The vellum leaf is mounted à l'Anglaise , the recto showing a pair of lovers before the altar of love, receiving laurel leaves from Hera in her chariot drawn by colourful peacocks with magnificent outspread tails. To the right, seated by the obelisk, sits Diana with her weapons, holding a cornucopia brought by the generously proportioned figure of Abundance who has joined the scene. Fame with her wings and trumpet is perhaps also present. The verso is painted simply with a boy playing with his dog along a tree-lined avenue. The reserves recto/verso are painted delicately with flowers highlighted with gold. Guard length 11.25 inches or 28.5cm

Purchased at Phillips on 6th March 1986 for £100.

Sold for £170
Estimated at £100 - £300

Both guard sticks have repair, one repair has failed, and several gorge sticks are broken to the right.

We cannot guarantee a reply to any requests made within 48 hours of the start of the auction. The absence of a Condition Report from a lot does not mean that the lot is in perfect condition. All lots are available on public view ahead of an auction and we encourage prospective buyers to inspect an item in person where possible. Our Condition Reports are not prepared by professional conservators, restorers, or engineers, and are prepared with the naked eye unless otherwise stated.

Regarding Pictures, Prints and Works on Paper, works are not examined out of the frame, unless specifically stated. Tennants Auctioneers do not cover damage to gilded wood or plaster picture frames, or to picture frame glass whilst the item is in our possession.

We accept no liability for the opinions expressed in any Condition Report.
