This work is a study for the bronze statue of Mill Reef at Paul Mellon's Rokeby Stables in Virginia. Skeaping has written the following on the reverse "This is a portrait of the most charming horse I have known, now in the possession of a Lady, Denise, of equal charm".

Odd small piece of debris or thunderfly trapped under glass. Possible light time staining to sheet but appears generally clean and bright in appearance. Some transferrance of chalks on sheet mostly within background below the main horses head. Very slight cockle to sheet with possible some very light handling creases to edges. Broadly in a good state of preservation. Not examined out of the frame.
