1038

Alfred Montague (1832-1883)
Fishermen returning home with the day's catch
Signed and dated 1882?, oil on canvas, 30cm by 44cm

Provenance: Jan Mawby, The Long Gallery, Northamptonshire

Sold for £380
Estimated at £400 - £600

Relined cleaned and revarnished. Surface is slightly flattened as a result of the restoration process. Some surface dirt and discoloured varnish now in evidence. Areas of varying sized stable cracquelure. There has been general strengthening through the darker grey of the clouds, less consistent strengthening to the darker elements of the sales and the front part of the ship. The back of the ship also shows general strengthening as does the upper part of the cargo nearest the figure. Further retouches and strengthening through the darker tones and shades of the rocks nearest the edge of the sea and more concentrated retouches and strengthening through the darker parts of the water approx centre and left hand side. More moinor scattered retouches presumably to old cracquelure in the sky. The definition describing the wicker item bobbing in the sea lower right also show sign of some general strengthening. Odd minor surface scruff. One or two small areas of cracquelure beginning to lift e.g. upper left hand corner.
