A Section of "The Atlantic Cable of 1865", mounted in a circular gold pendant, engraved Recovered by The Great Eastern, September 5th 1866, lat 50d 11m.n. lon 43d 59mw, with a suspension loop, 2.6cm wide
The first successful cable to span the Atlantic was in 1866, prior to this there were several failed attempts. The cable was needed to make instant communication between the Continents; hence news could be transmitted in minutes as opposed to the 10 days each way for the transatlantic ship passage.
The 1865 attempt was undertaken by Cyrus Field using the SS Great Eastern.
In 1865 SS Great Eastern was the world's largest ship ever built (700ft long), designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, and proved far too ahead of its time to be commercial.
The coordinates (50.183333,-43.983333) refers to a point approximately 300 miles from Newfoundland.
