In an overall very good state of preservation, cleaned and re-varnished. There is an amount of underpainting with visible brushmarks in incongruous directions to surface paint, more notably across the left-hand vessel. Some of the darker tones denoting the rigging of the boats, the general outline and darker tones and shadows on the right-hand side may have received a little strengthening. This is not especially evident under a UV light. Odd isolated patch of fine stable cracquelure. Otherwise in a good and highly presentable state of preservation.

Auction: The TB & R Jordan Collection, 15th Jul, 2023
Tom and Rosamund Jordan were leading specialists in the Staithes Group of painters for over 40 years.
In the late 19th and early 20th century, the tiny, picturesque fishing village of Staithes on the North Yorkshire coast became host to a colony of artists, attracted to the area by the towering cliffs, stormy seas, the clarity of light and eminently paintable cottages and harbours. The Staithes School artists were greatly inspired by the French Impressionists, working en plein air to capture fleeting moments of light, air, and water, albeit with an edge of harder, northern grit.
The Jordans, who were equally passionate about Staithes, were champions of this pioneering group of artists, and over 100 works from their collection will be offered in this sale, including works by a Mark Senior, Owen Bowen, Arthur A. Friedenson and Frank Henry Mason.
Part II of their collection will be sold at a later date.
