. Each broadly in a good and stable state of preservation with surface dirt and discoloured/deteriorated varnish which is showing as opaque in some areas whilst retaining its gloss in others. The example featuring the Rabbi studying (not by candlelight) has extended areas of essentially fine stable craquelure within his upturned left hand, to a lesser extent extending through the books and his right hand, within and around his face and hat, the background above his right hand and shoulder and again to a more concentrated degree within the background upper right hand area. There is a visible, slightly diagonal linear mark approx. 3cm in length within the background above his right shoulder and whilst there is some craquelure following the general line it would almost appear to be an indentation into wet paint? Some minor rubbing to edges. There is a more pronounced linear abrasion/rubbing immediately below the signature and roughly the same length lower left hand side edge. Odd minor surface scuffs/indentations. The other example has the odd area of very minor craquelure, discoloured and deteriorated varnish to a lesser extent than the former. Some general surface dirt. Odd very minor surface scuffs/indentations. Otherwise each is broadly in good original condition.

We are happy to provide Condition Reports to prospective buyers, but would welcome your request as soon as possible, preferably at least 48 hours before the Day of Sale. We cannot guarantee a reply to any requests made within 48 hours of the start of the auction. The absence of a Condition Report from a lot does not mean that the lot is in perfect condition. All lots are available on public view ahead of an auction and we encourage prospective buyers to inspect an item in person where possible. Our Condition Reports are not prepared by professional conservators, restorers, or engineers, and are prepared with the naked eye unless otherwise stated.

Regarding Pictures, Prints and Works on Paper, works are not examined out of the frame, unless specifically stated. Tennants Auctioneers do not cover damage to gilded wood or plaster picture frames, or to picture frame glass whilst the item is in our possession.

We accept no liability for the opinions expressed in any Condition Report.
