Sold for £2,200
Estimated at £500 - £800

. In fully restored condition. Re-lined, cleaned and re-varnished. There is an area of general overpainting and strengthening in and around the shadows and darker areas of the cartouche upper left hand corner. Approx. 7-9 further relatively insignificant areas of retouching within the general upper area of the cartouche internally - the largest being broadly 2cm by 2cm albeit not uniform. Further patch of retouching/overpainting upper right hand corner approx. 1cm by 2cm. Two small retouches one to the gentleman's left cheek and another to centre of his lips. Two patches of overpainting/retouching within the background of the left hand side. Possibly some general strengthening to elements of the definition (of a different date). As the work in unframed there is a certain amount of general knocks, scuffs and abrasions to the outer edges and to a lesser degree in other remaining areas of the painting. Some of the restoration has deteriorated and is visible with the eye. Partial stretcher shadow. Essentially fine stable craquelure. Some of the surface is somewhat flattened and the paint is thin in places from the restoration process, however more detailed or worked areas such as the face, lace and brocaded arm retain a reasonable degree of depth and integrity.

We cannot guarantee a reply to any requests made within 48 hours of the start of the auction. The absence of a Condition Report from a lot does not mean that the lot is in perfect condition. All lots are available on public view ahead of an auction and we encourage prospective buyers to inspect an item in person where possible. Our Condition Reports are not prepared by professional conservators, restorers, or engineers, and are prepared with the naked eye unless otherwise stated.

Regarding Pictures, Prints and Works on Paper, works are not examined out of the frame, unless specifically stated. Tennants Auctioneers do not cover damage to gilded wood or plaster picture frames, or to picture frame glass whilst the item is in our possession.

We accept no liability for the opinions expressed in any Condition Report.
