Pronounced staining across sheet with general reduction to overall colour depth. Scattered foxing spot, some of which has been disguised with some retouches in white gouache or similar. In addition to concealing scratches and the same technique has been adopted to conceal surface scratches pit mark and imperfections within the sky. Further pit marks, and damages which have received little or no intervention to lower left-hand corner. A further cluster of same issue to the lower reaches of standing figure and vertically arranged additions to standing figures, general waistline area. See images. Foxing to mount in general, no evidence of cockling, not examined out of the frame. Some areas of the surface are slightly worn or abraded such as the left-hand side of the vessel held by standing figure and the general condition of the surface, with numerous staining pit marks and scratching, fairly poor. Auction: British, European & Sporting Art, 15th Jul, 2023

The British, European and Sporting Art Sale at Tennants Auctioneers will see a fine equestrian portrait of ‘Lady Caroline Held by a Groom, Newmarket’ attributed to Thomas Spencer (1700-1763) go under the hammer. It will be joined by notable lots from the Estate of Martin & Felicity Mackintosh of Harrogate, including a rich and plentiful still life of game, fruit and flowers by Hendrik Reekers (1815-1854), and further works by the likes of Ford Madox Brown and William Holman Hunt from the Estate of the late Ian Stephenson of Laithes, Penrith, Cumbria. Other notable lots include Montague Dawson's “HMS Amethyst running the Yangtse Gauntlet, 30th July 1949”.
