An Unusual Early 18th Century Ivory Fan with Double Leaf, the leaf depicting Chinese people...

An Unusual Early 18th Century Ivory Fan with Double Leaf, the leaf depicting Chinese people taking refreshments in the garden outside their abode, one holding a fan, a variety of colourful birds in the trees (note that the trees appear to be applied with straw which has then been varnished) these birds being painted and also applied with feathers. Similar colourful birds are painted on the gorge in three vignettes, three larger vignettes on the verso, the birds again painted and applied with feathers. The guard sticks are both carved with a classical figure and further stylised designs. Both have a mother-of-pearl thumb guard. The rivet has a green stone. Turning the fan onto its side, further carving is evident, on one side the head of a woman, on the other the head of a bearded man. Guard length 27.5cm. Together with a green velvet fan box with cream silk lining

Sold for £2,000
Estimated at £800 - £1,000

Generally sound, the colours are fresh, one split to a fold near the centre of the leaf, one or two period repairs to nicks on folds. The catch on the box is not reliable.
