  Lot 1152

1152

Follower of William Dobson (1611-1646)
Portrait of George Leyburne (according to inscription) head and shoulders, wearing a white collar, in a feigned oval
Inscribed, oil on canvas, 64cm by 61.5cm

Sold for £550
Estimated at £600 - £900

An old lining on an old stretcher - most keys missing and tension fairly slack. The original tacking margins have been removed as can be seen at the face where the top of the canvas is exposed. There are damages to the original canvas along the bottom edge including a ruck in the bottom right corner.

There is a finescale brittle age craquelure throughout, with finescale flaking both historic and some more recent patches. There are lines of restored and unrestored losses associated with stretcher bar marks on all sides, with unrestored losses to bottom and right, and larger restored losses to top and left. Old restoration has discoloured and cracked slightly. There has been flaking in the past at all edges - unfilled.

The 'George Leyburne' is painted in a later hand, different to age/date. There is some reinforcing overpaint to hair and eyes (see images in UV). It is difficult to gauge if there is any older overpaint in the background due to the thick obscuring old varnish.

There has been some abrasion in places to the upper layers of paint, for example in patches to the brown shirt, grey collar and hair.

There is an old opaque, patchy yellowed and milky varnish layer, and old ingrained dirt. Scattered minor surface abrrasions and scratches, with a large 1 inch scuff bottom left corner. A layer of surface dirt.

Examined in frame.

Auction: British, European & Sporting Art, 16th Mar, 2024

Coming up for auction this Spring are three notable works by Adolphe Valette (1876-1942), a French Impressionist artist who spent the majority of his career in the North of England. Whilst he is best remembered today as being the highly influential tutor to L.S. Lowry, Valette created a significant body of work in oils, watercolours and drawing media. All three works are sold with provenance from The Perera Collection, the largest collection of works by Valette to have been assembled in private hands.

Further notable works in the sale include an exquisitely detailed still life of a peach, black grapes and cobnuts on a marble shelf by Emilie Preyer (1849-1930), and a work by historical genre painter Edward Matthew Ward (1816-1879) that depicts the hero of a popular comic ballad, John Gilpin.

The sale will also see the final part of the Raymond Booth Studio, comprising 19 works. Raymond Booth (1929-2015) was perhaps the greatest botanical artist and illustrator of his generation, and his passion for the natural world shines through in his highly detailed oil studies of flora and fauna.
