In fully restored condition, relined, cleaned and re-varnished. The restoration has slightly flattened the paint surface. Areas of thin paint, notably in the red curtain to left of the sitter's face although not exclusively. Frame rubbing to edges, most notable to upper left corner where there is a loss, approx 2cm across at edge of frame. Several patches of fine to medium-sized cracquelure throughout the sitter's hat, face, clothing more generally, throughout red curtain and across background. More widely spaced stable cracquelure in evidence across lower third of the painting. Most notable in the white of her dress at lower right corner. Areas of bitumen in the paint has split (see images). The odd sporadic knock/scuff/mark. Retouching/infilling to old cracquelure in several places, most notably in the red curtain immediately next to the sitter's head although not exclusively. Further infilling and retouching throughout black of the sitters dress. Overpainting to the sitters left arm and hand. Strengthening to the contours and outline of the sitter's face. Patch of retouching to the background above the sitter's head towards the edge of the frame. Other slightly more sporadic areas of retouching and infilling elsewhere. Our Condition Reports are not prepared by professional conservators, restorers, or engineers, and are prepared with the naked eye unless otherwise stated.

Regarding Pictures, Prints and Works on Paper, works are not examined out of the frame, unless specifically stated. Tennants Auctioneers do not cover damage to gilded wood or plaster picture frames, or to picture frame glass whilst the item is in our possession.
