Manner of Claude Lorrain (1600-1682) French
Travellers in an Arcadian landscape
Signed, oil on canvas, 76.5cm by 105cm

Sold for £20,000
Estimated at £3,000 - £5,000

Old reline. Covered in a thick layer of dirt and discoloured varnish. Various losses, damages and abrasions to outer edges and corners. See images. Stretcher shadow. Varying-sized cracquelure across surface, some more pronounced than others. Varnish has deteriorated, particularly around the figure group and rocky outcrop to the right of this and has a bloom-like/chalky appearance. See image. A similar effect can be found also through the foliage of the trees. Relatively consistent retouching over painting throughout the background and sky. Evidence of old variously angled tears to canvas, see images which runs from just right of the lower foliage running down and across the water and landscape into the grass and foreground of the lower right-hand corner. Other expanses and areas of later strengthening and consistent likely retouching throughout a good amount of the foliage, bridge and landscape mostly to the lower left-hand side. Might be described as "Country House condition" with numerous imperfections and historic intervention etc.

We are happy to provide Condition Reports to prospective buyers, but would welcome your request as soon as possible, preferably at least 48 hours before the Day of Sale. We cannot guarantee a reply to any requests made within 48 hours of the start of the auction. The absence of a Condition Report from a lot does not mean that the lot is in perfect condition. A Condition Report is an honest expression of our opinion, not a statement of fact and is provided as a service to the seller. All lots are available on public view ahead of an auction and we encourage prospective buyers to inspect an item in person where possible. Our Condition Reports are not prepared by professional conservators, restorers, or engineers, and are prepared with the naked eye unless otherwise stated.

Regarding Pictures, Prints and Works on Paper, works are not examined out of the frame, unless specifically stated. Tennants Auctioneers do not cover damage to gilded wood or plaster picture frames, or to picture frame glass whilst the item is in our possession.

We accept no liability for the opinions expressed in any Condition Report.
