In fully restored condition. Fairly stiffly relined, cleaned and re-varnished. Surface is slightly flattened as a result of the restoration process. Some surface dirt and discoloured varnish now in evidence. It would seem that a good amount of the sky particularly the darker clouds in general has been retouched/strengthened/overpainted. An amount of this or the surface in general has deteriorated leaving fairly large areas, particularly along the upper edge and upper right-hand side section and now displays a chalky quality. The upper part and outline of the centrally placed copse and foliage has been retouched and strengthened as has parts of the outline and darker tones and shadows of the windmill on the right-hand side as well as to a lesser degree the outline and sails of the smaller left-hand side windmill. Mostly vertical patch of retouching just left of centre, lower edge approx 1-1.5cm in length. Further fine retouches to left-hand side edge, lower section, corner, sporadically lower edge and scattered within the foreground. Some effectively vertically arranged fairly pronounced cracquelure most notably above the copse of trees and within the sky of the left-hand side. Further less notable and varying sized cracquelure elsewhere etc. For more information please contact the department.

We are happy to provide Condition Reports to prospective buyers, but would welcome your request as soon as possible, preferably at least 48 hours before the Day of Sale. We cannot guarantee a reply to any requests made within 48 hours of the start of the auction. The absence of a Condition Report from a lot does not mean that the lot is in perfect condition. All lots are available on public view ahead of an auction and we encourage prospective buyers to inspect an item in person where possible. Our Condition Reports are not prepared by professional conservators, restorers, or engineers, and are prepared with the naked eye unless otherwise stated.

Regarding Pictures, Prints and Works on Paper, works are not examined out of the frame, unless specifically stated. Tennants Auctioneers do not cover damage to gilded wood or plaster picture frames, or to picture frame glass whilst the item is in our possession.

We accept no liability for the opinions expressed in any Condition Report.
