An English medieval carved stone head of a cleric, circa 14th century, carved almost in the round in millstone grit. The face framed with schematic hair above typically austere features, lipped eyelids, straight nose and slightly parted mouth, 15cm high (head alone), 33.5cm high (cased)

Presented in a wooden case carved by Frank Jackson in 1920. The case bearing information label, and stating the head was 'restored to F Jackson 1959' (the then owner of Scargill Lodge possibly). The case also containing a newspaper cutting of an article about the head.

Provenance: Found by Mr A Hudson of Scargill amongst rubble while cleaning out an outhouse. Presented to The Bowes Museum and then examined and authenticated by Rosemary Cramp, lecturer in Archaology at Durham University. A stylistically similar head was later found at Bowes, 3 miles from the current head.
Not Sold

Provenance is as stated in newspaper article. In our opinion this is medieval.

We cannot guarantee a reply to any requests made within 48 hours of the start of the auction. The absence of a Condition Report from a lot does not mean that the lot is in perfect condition. Our Condition Reports are not prepared by professional conservators, restorers, or engineers, and are prepared with the naked eye unless otherwise stated.

Regarding Pictures, Prints and Works on Paper, works are not examined out of the frame, unless specifically stated. Tennants Auctioneers do not cover damage to gilded wood or plaster picture frames, or to picture frame glass whilst the item is in our possession.

We accept no liability for the opinions expressed in any Condition Report.
