  Lot 170

170

J.Watson (19th century) American
A floral arrangement of Roses, fuchsia, Carnations and other flowers in a glass vase on a table, dressed with strawberries and cherries
Signed and dated 1848?, oil on canvas, 41.5cm by 32cm

Sold for £1,100
Estimated at £1,200 - £1,800

According to a label to the reverse some restoration work has been undertaken by Miklos Bansaghi and there is some correspondence between the vendor and himself. There is no extensive restoration report available, but in said correspondence the restorer does refer to the fact a clean has been undertaken to remove the top layer of varnish but that "the underlying- most probably original varnish layer still remains".
The painting is enclosed to reverse, but retains the original canvas. Slight stretcher shadow, stable cracquelure.
Examination with a UV light would suggest some likely general strenthening to background with two further delicate vertical lines of infilling approx 2 cms in length within the white carnations on the upper left hand side and another above and right of the pink carnations upper right of the floral arrangement. Otherwise the floral arrangement and brushwork would appear to be intact and good.

We cannot guarantee a reply to any requests made within 48 hours of the start of the auction. The absence of a Condition Report from a lot does not mean that the lot is in perfect condition.
