Paper/vellum laid down onto panel. Horizontal crack to panel following line of grain approx. centre reverse with one or two other pronounced areas of wide grain. Puckering to vellum? within the red robe below the Christ Child's head. Further horizontal narrow cockle along lower edge. Visible vertical crease full length to sheet approx. 1cm from far right edge at widest point. One or two other less notable imperfections to sheet. Pronounced fine stable craquelure throughout excepting in areas of later paint and restoration within background and to a lesser extent the Madonna's hair to left hand side, folds of her cloak above her right hand and wrist. Smaller retouched across the body of the Christ Child. More consistently across her left hand and other patches within the dark shadows of the cloak behind the Christ Child's feet. The majority of the retouching and overpaint is sluightly incongruous and visible with the eye. Covered in a thick layer of dirt and discoloured varnish. Minor rubbing/abrasions to all edges. Fine, small, oval shaped damage? to background right hand side at Madonna's chin level. For more information please contact department.
