The Private Collection of Janet Menzies, Journalist
'I began in journalism in the 1980s, the start of an economic boom reflected in an explosion of designer fashion and a new importance of “style”. I edited my own weekly fashion and style page (Update) on the Daily Mail in the mid ’80s and then moved on to be launch features editor for Hello! Magazine, which we never thought would be a hit …! I have attached a photo of me interviewing the late Baron Hubert de Givenchy for Hello! at the Ritz, Paris. I then went to the Daily Express and edited the women’s department, which included Jackie Modlinger’s fashion team. Most of the items here date from that period and shortly afterwards when I was a freelance.
It was a tremendously glamorous time, we never stopped working and partying. Today I write books and articles about the countryside and spend most of my days in muddy wellies. I don’t think the shires are quite ready for an Isabell Kristensen black lace and crystal cocktail frock, so with great nostalgia I am saying goodbye to some of my pieces.'
