A 19th Century Ivory Fan, with carved and pierced 18th century monture, the sticks delicate and shaped, the gorge sticks in pairs. The double paper leaf is made to simulate vellum, and thus this fan is a marriage of two periods. The central cartouche continues the 18th century feel with a depiction of a Lady at her toilet, wearing a powdering robe as her maid attends to her wig. An elegantly dressed lady looks on, fan in hand, the boudoir finely appointed, the dressing table mirrored, and draped in silk. At both sides the reserves are finely painted with quite marvellous birds, perched on flowering branches and in flight. The verso is relatively plain with a fine gold border and central entwined initials, possibly "CD", in pink and blue, complementing the colours used on the recto. Guard length 11 inches or 28cm

Purchased at Bonhams on 16th May 1980 for £70.00

Sold for £320
Estimated at £350 - £500

A repair to the bottom leaf border is evident from the verso. The fan bears an earlier label stating “English about 1760. Good English fan rather rare”.
