An Art Nouveau Fan, with painted and gilded mother-of-pearl monture, the pearl showing signs of dye in a subtle shade of lemon. The sticks and guards, shaped and pierced, are decorated with delicate flowers painted in lilac, a shade picked up on the leaf of gauze overlaid with paper, cut away to allow for three different painted scenes, all outlined in gold with the addition of minute gold sequins. From the left, a lady in 18th century dress is accompanied by a young boy, a winged cherub looking on. Centrally, a coastal scene with white buildings leading down to the water, the succulent vegetation suggesting a Mediterranean location. And to the right, two maidens are approached by a young man carrying a tray, presumably attempting to sell his wares. Contained in a cream card fan box with simple gilded decoration on the lid.
