A Rare Art Nouveau Double Image Fan, the shaped monture of pink mother-of-pearl, gilded, the shaped gorge a particular element of the overall design. The leaf is formed from various components to facilitate the design, and is in some sections backed with stiffened cream gauze or similar fabric. The main part of the fan, painted, is possibly vellum. The stiffened gauze is used for the areas printed with bobbin lace. The central scene and the oval beneath it are formed of mica or similar to create windows, through which can be seen various gentlemen peering into the house. From the verso, these men can be seen from behind, full form. At each side is a further window and a balcony, these being created from the gauze alone. Below the balcony scene is a further area which is embroidered with yellow thread and tiny gold sequins to look like a lattice. The various ladies, sumptuously dressed in 18th century sack-back robes, or robes a la polonaise, are seemingly beset by suitors. A kitten rolls around the salon floor playing with beads or threads. Signed under the balcony scene, A. Lafite? Contained in a plain dark green fan box, unlabelled.
