The Sacrifice of Jephthah's Daughter: An 18th Century Ivory Fan, the monture carved and pierced, the guards with a figure, the gorge elaborately and finely carved and pierced. Centrally, and backed with bugau, a carving of two ladies with gentleman at their shoulder. To each side, in vignettes, a figure perhaps with a musical instrument. The rest of the gorge is filled with elaborate scrolling and piercing. The double vellum leaf depicts the return home of Jephthah, a judge in Israel, who had been away to fight the Ammonites. Before leaving, he had prayed to God for success, rashly promising to offer up as a sacrifice the first person who met him at home on his return. Sadly, this was his beloved only daughter. Guard length 28cm
Not Sold

Mother of pearl loss to behind the gorge sticks. Folds rubbed. Some brown marking to the verso. Broken upper guard. The presence of a male adult, winged, may offer a different interpretation for this scene. Instead of a sacrifice, it could be a marriage, the winged adult being Cupid in an uncommon form, and the fire being the flame of love, not death.

We cannot guarantee a reply to any requests made within 48 hours of the start of the auction. The absence of a Condition Report from a lot does not mean that the lot is in perfect condition.
