Potter (Beatrix).
A small collection of ephemera relating to Beatrix Potter, comprising;
Three photographs of Beatrix Potter in her garden at Sawrey (c.1938) (85mm x 136mm, postcard printing on reverse), each accompanied by the negative and a smaller photograph of the same (45mm x 68mm) with manuscript description on rear, each in card presentation folder. A fourth photograph (also in the garden with friends) is present in the smaller format with negative.
A three page Autograph Letter Signed, from [Capt.] H.G. Griffin of Grasmere to Mrs Heelis (Beatrix Potter), dated August 20, 1936. The letter follows their meeting a few days prior at which they had discussed the possibility of Mrs Heelis leaving her property to the National Trust. Griffin clarifies the conditions upon which the Trust could accept a property and also the requirements for the waiving of death duties. The letter ends with arrangements for visiting Mrs Heelis. Notwithstanding the subject, the tone of the letter suggests that they were friends.
Typed Letter Signed from The Times, dated 29th December 1943, thanking Capt. Griffin for loan of the photographs and returning the same.
Five press cuttings including ‘An Appreciation’ which uses one of the photographs.
[Provenance: sold at 1818 Auctions (lot 496, 3 June 2019) by a Cumbrian family who knew Beatrix Potter]
