A Mid-19th Century Chinese Mandarin Fan, Qing Dynasty, wooden sticks lacquered in black with three figures in the gorge in grey, a further figure on each guard, foliage behind. The double paper leaf has similar scenes recto/verso with distant mountains, figures with faces of applied and painted ivory, wearing silk robes, and somewhat different headwear. Guard length 32cm. Together with a fine and heavy polished wood fitted fan box, the outer lid having five differently shaped and deeply carved scenes of daily life, with an empty central oval suitable for a monogram. The interior fittings are covered in blue silk, the lid interior painted with four figures, two carrying fans, their faces of applied and painted ivory. The fan is further protected within the box by an interior glass lid, bound in patterned silk

The monture appears sound, with slight rubbing to the lacquer by the rivet. The leaf folds have been restored and at least one further split requires attention. The box lid lacks a 7cm section of wood at either end (but the fan cannot slide out) and the clasp is sound.
