Original Artwork.
An exceptional early nineteenth century scrapbook containing a variety of original artwork and prints. Comprising approximately 43 monochrome prints, 11 coloured prints, 22 pencil sketches, 20 watercolours and 7 sepia wash, as well as two small votives and two silhouettes. Many interesting items including:
Ten good quality botanical illustrations, watercolour and body colour. Various sheet sizes from 230mm x 310mm to 160mm x 180mm;
Six topographical views, mountains, rivers and dwellings, watercolour and body colour;
Two attractive watercolours of Trevaen (Tryfan) from the Waen-oer and Snowdon from Llanberris, 86mm x 113mm and 85mm x 114mm, mounted on hinged cards with script on the reverse, mounts signed J.Parker, 1824;
Several very good quality pencil sketches including portraits, some with crayon;
A silhouette on pencil background signed by Auguste Edouart, 1831;
A small circular river scene, sepia wash, signed S. Rösel (believed to be the German artist, Samuel Rösel, 1768-1843), 86mm diameter;
A pencil portrait of a lady with striking eyes, 96mm x 85mm;
A hand-coloured aquatint of the Thames Tunnel, image 240mm x 260mm;
Two Alpine views after Gabriel Lory: Vue de l’Hospice du Grimsel, hand-coloured aquatint, image 192mm x 282mm, sheet 252mm x 335mm (BM gives date as 1822) and Vue de l’Hospice du St. Bernard, hand-coloured aquatint, image 195mm x 280mm, sheet 252mm x 341mm;
Two small votives with moveable hand coloured flowers revealing icons beneath, Prague: J. Pachmayer, German text, white metal and gilt covers mounted separately;
‘An Indian Gazette’, [1760 or later], hand coloured engraving giving a symbolic account of an Native American expedition during the Seven Years War when the Iroquois sided with the French. Sheet 180mm x 190mm. The print lifts to reveal a printed explanatory table.
All but five items mounted within the album (leaves 282mm x 435mm), contemporary half leather binding with marbled boards (worn, joints splitting, back-strip torn).
