A Mid-18th Century Ivory Fan, the double leaf en grisaille in sea green, with a touch of flesh...

A Mid-18th Century Ivory Fan, the double leaf en grisaille in sea green, with a touch of flesh colour for faces and hands. A courting couple, seated under an arbour, are joined by others, appearing to converse. The monture, carved and pierced to the upper guards, with flowers and foliage, has a central oval to the gorge, the remaining sticks painted the same sea green, complementing the leaf. The verso features a simple dwelling and landscape. Bears an old auction label stating a date of 21st October 1970, and 296/2, presumably the lot number. Guard length approx. 10.5 inches or 27cm. Together with An 18th Century Ivory Fan with plain royal blue fabric leaf, probably a gentleman's fan, the upper guards plain, the lower section and gorge elaborately carved and pierced with figures and decorative ovals; Another Mid-18th Century Ivory Fan, with simple decoration to upper guards and gorge, the double paper leaf colourfully painted with a family outing in the countryside, the adults taking their repose under a tree, a boy playing with his dog, being observed by a peasant girl in country bonnet carrying a burden on her back. The verso is plain. Guard length approx. 10.5 inches or 25cm (3)

. The first fan is in reasonable order with foxing to the verso and an odd split to a fold. The gentleman' s fan has a badly split leaf with tape applied to the verso to secure it. The third fan has several complete splits to the leaf folds and attempts have been made in the past to restore it.
