A Fine Painted 18th Century Brisé Fan, carved and pierced, the main cartouche with a European representation, perhaps a theatrical scene, the reserves and gorge with Chinoiserie. The recto shows the interior of a rather austere but grand house, a lady reclined on a day bed, a man leaning over as if attending to her health, observed by another lady and gentleman. Perhaps a scene from a contemporary play? The reserves present Chinoiserie scenes featuring several figures. The gorge is painted with large but delicate flowers, a panel to either side painted in gold with birds in flight. The verso has not been examined as the fan is glued in place within a fan shaped frame. Guard length approx. 8 5/8 inches or 22cm.

See page 14 in "European Fans" by Maryse Volet, where she refers to a scene having perhaps been a portrayal by a travelling theatre.

Sold for £280
Estimated at £200 - £400

. Paint rubbed. Contained in a fan shaped frame, no obvious damage or repair but not properly examined. Interesting subject, the gentleman leaning over the lady does not appear to have any medical equipment and indeed is dressed in similar fashion to the gentleman observing.

We cannot guarantee a reply to any requests made within 48 hours of the start of the auction. The absence of a Condition Report from a lot does not mean that the lot is in perfect condition.
