A Fine Late 18th Century Ivory Fan with painted leaf, the monture elaborately carved. The guards, carved with foliage and animals, are shaped in the lower section to complement a design feature on the gorge. The gorge itself has several intricate carvings, the borders of which are gilded, and further small plaques are painted in colour with flowers and birds. The centre of the gorge is carved with a large cartouche showing a warrior with others, possibly the family of Darius before Alexander, one kneeling before him. To each side, a carving of winged cherubs. The reserves are full of flowers, many in strong blues, coordinating with the blues used for the costumes. The painted leaf features a mythological scene to the recto, Hera/Juno standing at her chariot, drawn by peacocks in the clouds, asking the keeper of the winds Aeolus to release the winds against Aeneas, to destroy his fleet. To the left are Hera's female attendants and Cupid. Aeolus was also king of the island of Aeolia, one of the Lipara islands close to Sicily. The verso depicts a gathering of friends in the countryside, another couple strolling with a backdrop of rolling hills and sheep in the fields.

See the Boucher painting of 1769 held in the Kimbell Art Museum, one of a series of six that Boucher painted for Jean-François Bergeret de Frouville's hõtel in Paris.

. Good colour. Some rubbing to the leaf folds, a few slivers lacking within the gorge fretwork. The verso is possibly a later addition.
