Two Large Late 19th Century Fans, one with an attractive Chinoiserie leaf, the other Japanese, with bold painted daisies, the verso plain cream, and knotted string detail to the bamboo guards. The first fan is striking, with turreted buildings, canopies and latticed bridges filling the scene. To the right, a group of five, mostly carrying items which could be ceremonial. To the left, four more figures, again carrying gifts or provisions, several with long plaits to the back of the heads. Within the buildings, a couple are seated, holding parasols aloft. The wood monture is painted in black with gold scrolling and flowers to compliment the leaf. Double leaf, the verso plain cream, save for a simple floral spray in gold. Both fans, guards approx. 13.25 inches or 33.5cm long

Sold for £140
Estimated at £150 - £200

. Slight rubbing to the paint on the chinoiserie fan, and a few short splits to the top of leaf folds and one along the lower border. The top layer of the fan has a longer split down the central fold but is still sound.

We cannot guarantee a reply to any requests made within 48 hours of the start of the auction. The absence of a Condition Report from a lot does not mean that the lot is in perfect condition. All lots are available on public view ahead of an auction and we encourage prospective buyers to inspect an item in person where possible. Our Condition Reports are not prepared by professional conservators, restorers, or engineers, and are prepared with the naked eye unless otherwise stated.

Regarding Pictures, Prints and Works on Paper, works are not examined out of the frame, unless specifically stated. Tennants Auctioneers do not cover damage to gilded wood or plaster picture frames, or to picture frame glass whilst the item is in our possession.
