A Mid-19th Century Fan with lithographed leaf, the central scene featuring a village dance, the fiddler standing on a barrel in front of the crowd, a dog next to him, the younger villagers dancing, old men observing, a smaller vignette to the left showing a family dining outdoors and to the right more dancing outside a tavern. The reserves, quite extravagant at each side, are flamboyant with gold cherubs and leafy foliage. The verso, likewise rather striking, is designed with balanced and quite classical sections including vases and large sprays of leaves, in a combination of white, strong pink, and gold. The monture in comparison is quite understated with some element of gilding. Guard length approx. 10.5 inches or 26.5cm. Together with A Second Fan of a similar period, this time showing very elegant members of High Society in the 18th century dancing in the grounds of a large house fronting onto a lake. The reserves, quite Moorish in design, feature tiled archways containing large urns in strong blue and gold, the top and bottom borders of the leaf continuing in the theme with repeated designs in blue and gold. The verso in contrast has a subdued design featuring bids and butterflies amongst flowers, a central oval printed with some form of family arms or heraldry. Guard length approx. 10.5 inches or 27cm (2)

Sold for £60
Estimated at £70 - £100

. The first fan lacks the lower guard. The second fan has come apart at the shoulder on the lower guard, both sections present.
