Summer Fine Sale

  Lot 57

57

A Flight & Barr Worcester Porcelain Mug, by John Pennington, circa 1795, of cylindrical form, painted in sepia monochrome with a young girl holding a spaniel within gilt borders, titled The Age of Bliss to the underside and inscribed Flight & Barr Wor. Manufacturers to Their Majesties below a crown
11cm high

It is believed that John Pennington was the first painter to be engaged by the Flight factory after the Chamberlains left to set up their own works. His work includes the famous Hope Service, made in 1792 for the Duke of Clarence and the pair of punchbowls bearing portraits of George III and Queen Charlotte presented to the Corporation of Worcester. The decoration on this mug is typical of the high-quality figure painting which occurs on a relatively small number of recorded examples.

See Sandon (John) Dictionary of Worcester Porcelain, pg.258 and Sandon (Henry) Flight & Barr Worcester Porcelain, pg.41 for similar examples

Sold for £600

We cannot guarantee a reply to any requests made within 48 hours of the start of the auction. The absence of a Condition Report from a lot does not mean that the lot is in perfect condition. All lots are available on public view ahead of an auction and we encourage prospective buyers to inspect an item in person where possible. Our Condition Reports are not prepared by professional conservators, restorers, or engineers, and are prepared with the naked eye unless otherwise stated.

Regarding Pictures, Prints and Works on Paper, works are not examined out of the frame, unless specifically stated. Tennants Auctioneers do not cover damage to gilded wood or plaster picture frames, or to picture frame glass whilst the item is in our possession.
