Circle of Sir Peter Lely (1618-1680) Dutch
Three-quarter length portrait of Lady Elizabeth Capel
Daughter of Arthur, Lord Capel, wife of Charles, Earl of Carnarvon
Inscribed, oil on canvas 124.5cm by 102cm

Elizabeth Capel was the sister of Arthur Capel (1632-1693), first Earl of Essex and was known to have been painted several times by Lely. Eight pictures by Lely hung in the Library of Cassiobury Park, along with other family portraits, which remained in place until 1922, when the house and its contents were sold. A further example of Lely's painting of Elizabeth Capel can be found in the Metropolitan Museum, New York.

Sold for £17,000
Estimated at £7,000 - £10,000

In well presented condition overall, as would be expected for a piece of this age, the canvas has had an old lining. There are two patched repairs to the lower edge which fluoresce under UV light. There are two paint losses to the lower right corner and the stretcher marks are also visible, although these have been retouched as evident under UV examination. There is an area of paint cracking around the décolletage but it appears stable. There are several scattered repairs to the canvas, namely to the lower left corner around the tip of blue drapery. One above the right shoulder, the upper left corner and upper edge, centre. UV examination reveals fairly concentrated over painting around the edges of the canvas. There is also evidence of retouching to below the chin of figure, in the dark area between her bended elbow and face. Several smaller areas of scattered retouching to the dress and guitar. Some evidence of older over painting to right arm and scattered areas of retouching to background.

We are happy to provide Condition Reports to prospective buyers, but would welcome your request as soon as possible, preferably at least 48 hours before the Day of Sale. We cannot guarantee a reply to any requests made within 48 hours of the start of the auction. The absence of a Condition Report from a lot does not mean that the lot is in perfect condition. A Condition Report is an honest expression of our opinion, not a statement of fact and is provided as a service to the seller. All lots are available on public view ahead of an auction and we encourage prospective buyers to inspect an item in person where possible. Our Condition Reports are not prepared by professional conservators, restorers, or engineers, and are prepared with the naked eye unless otherwise stated.

Regarding Pictures, Prints and Works on Paper, works are not examined out of the frame, unless specifically stated. Tennants Auctioneers do not cover damage to gilded wood or plaster picture frames, or to picture frame glass whilst the item is in our possession.

We accept no liability for the opinions expressed in any Condition Report.
