Summer Fine Sale

  Lot 73

73

A Flight, Barr & Barr Worcester Porcelain Vase, probably by Samuel Smith, circa 1820, of twin-handled campana form, painted with seashells in a rocky coastal landscape within a gilt and jewelled cartouche on a blue ground highlighted in gilt, painted mark in red and impressed crowned FBB
30cm high

In his 1991 article The Regency Decorators of Worcester, John Sandon notes that Samuel Smith, whilst not mentioned by Soloman Cole, was one of the most important shell and landscape decorators at the factory, working from around 1795-1840. The shell painting on the present lot relates to a group of watercolour drawings held by the Royal Academy, where it is noted that they were previously in the possession of porcelain painters John Homes Smith and his son John Halphead Smith, porcelain painters, who probably knew or were perhaps related to Samuel Smith. A similar unsigned watercolour drawing attributed to John Barker was sold by Mellors & Kirk, 5 March 2014, lot 206. For related examples of shell painting on Worcester porcelain by Samuel Smith see Bonhams, New Bond Street, 8 June 2005, lot 329 and 21 March 2023, lot 195. For a similar vase see Kaminski Auctions, Beverly, MA, 27 June 2021, lot 1245

Sold for £1,800
Estimated at £2,000 - £3,000
