Boxing History.

The Boxing Referee. An exhaustive treatise on the duties of a Referee and an explanation of the Queensbury Rules relating to Boxing Contests and Competitions.
Queenhithe, 1910, 92 pages, portrait frontis, signed illuminated presentation leaf from the author to ‘The Earl of Lonsdale as a slight appreciation of the great services he has rendered to The Art of Boxing ….’, signed by the author (National Sporting Club, August 1910), bookplate of Hugh Cecil, Earl of Lonsdale, all edges gilt, full calf (worn). [Provenance: Lowther Castle Sale, 1947, lot 3835]
With a copy of Douglas Sutherland’s ‘The Yellow Earl’ which contains an interesting account of Lord Lowther’s role in the progress of boxing from illegal prize-fighting to respectable sport. The Lord Lonsdale Challenge Belt, was introduced by the Earl on behalf of the National Sporting Club.
