Trials and Executions
Extraordinary Life and Character of Mary Bateman bound with The Genuine Account of the Trial of Eugene Aram. Edward Baines, 1809. 8vo, later bound in cloth; pp. 56, 452; 14 plates.
A collection of trials from the late 18th and early 19th century attributed to William Bristow. In addition to Aram the larger collection includes John Sheppard, Jonathan Wild, Edward Burnworth and The Earl Ferrers. Part moral exemplar, part penny dreadful and part Red-Top reporting, the prison broadside was a common source of news and entertainment. These are typical of the style, complete with lurid detail and careful display of the penitence of the guilty. The see-saw nature of moral judgement can be seen in the wildly varying editorials on criminals and crimes. Some are clearly terrible villains but redeemed by their repentance, some are decried as the good led into terrible acts by dissolution, others still may well be innocent and perhaps more care should be taken to avoid such miscarriges in the future. A fascinating social history, both in its content and in its implicit readership.

. Pages toned with variable foxing, offsetting etc but very good.
