Fairy Tales The Renowned History of Little Red Riding Hood in Verse. Printed for B. Tabart, New Bond Street, and J. Harris, St Paul's Churchyard, 1808 (title corrected by hand from 1807, wrappers and frontis. dated 1808). Org. wrappers; engraved frontis. and 11 plates, all hand-coloured. Tabart and Harris remarkable publishing success went against contemporary opposition to fairy tales, and an almost universal didactic and spiritual tenor to children's books. In re-publishing polished and well-produced versions of fairy tales and chapbook stories they captured the public imagination and ensured that their versions would become the standard texts. Interestingly, despite their diametrically opposed viewpoints, Tabart actually published the work of Sarah Trimmer, one of his most vocal detractors. Whilst not the sole driver, Tabart's efforts were a major part of restoring imagination to the nursery, bringing the supernatural and the bizarre to children. Copies of his work, despite their importance, are rare and highly collectable. with The Trial and Execution of Cock Robin. Published by W. Darton, [c.1819. owner's ink inscription on verso of plates]. Org. wrappers; 14 engraved hand-coloured plates (missing first two). A scarce early children's book.
Not Sold

Both copies are soiled and worn with creases, tears and marking, and former owners' MSS notes on versos however they remain charming and rare examples of early children's publishing.
