Henk Helmantel (b.1945) Dutch Still life of a coffee grinder, metal bucket and a bowl of eggs arranged on a stone ledge Signed and dated 2004, signed and dated verso, oil on board, 69cm by 79cm
Born in 1945 and trained at the Academy Minerva in Groningen between 1961-1965 where he also started painting professionally, Helmantel is considered one of the Northern Realists and concentrates chiefly on producing still lifes and also interiors, usually of high Gothic or Romanesque architecture. All his paintings are executed with a sublime detail and an implied tranquillity, creating an unmistakable style that conjures to mind the works of the Netherlandish painters working during the 17th century. The fastidious and brilliant attention to detail which is afforded to the often simple and mundane artifacts of his still lifes engenders the paintings with a timeless and elevated significance, that is seldom matched in the modern tradition of painting, and an equal to a great many of the Dutch old masters.
