A George II Silver Basket, by Robert Brown, London, 1739, shaped oval and on openwork foliage...

A George II Silver Basket, by Robert Brown, London, 1739, shaped oval and on openwork foliage and mask-capped skirt base with four mask-capped feet, with openwork foliage and flower border and plain overhead swing handle, engraved with a coat-of-arms, 34cm wide, 62oz 8dwt

Robert Brown, the son of Richard Brown of Middlesex, served his apprenticeship to the silversmith David Tanqueray from July 1723 until his freedom in 1737. He was recorded as working around Piccadilly but seems to have a had a relatively short career with the last record of him appearing in 1743.

The pieces which are known with his mark included another basket of 1740 (see Bonhams, London, 21 June 2016, lot 194) and a pair of sauceboats (see Christie's, New York, 26 October 2006, lot 128). Both of those examples are also in the rococo style however not as fully realised as in the case of the present basket.

Sold for £5,800
Estimated at £5,000 - £8,000

. Fully marked underneath. The handle marked with lion passant. The marks are generally clear. Further later engraved underneath 'A.D. 1739'. There have been some very small repairs to the piercing. There are some overall surface scratches and wear, consistent with age and use.
