[Cave, William]
A Discourse Concerning the Unity of the Catholic Church Maintained in the Church of England. Printed for B. Tooke at the Ship in St Paul's Churchyard, and F. Gardner at the White Horse in Ludgate Street, 1684. 8vo, full vellum, spine lettered in ink; provenance: presented to the English Church Union Theological Library by the Rev. Berkeley.
The split between the Anglican and Roman Church formed as great a division, though younger, as that between Rome and the Orthodox Church. Cave's answer to the schism assumes the Roman church has incorrectly arogated primacy to itself and proceeds to draw back to an earlier Christ-formed Unity. He is careful to address Roman opposition to the validity of the Church and to argue for the necessity of Reformation - but he is also not slow to admit some errors arising from it, and makes efforts to distance the Church from its members in certain circumstances. An uncommon text from a noted Divine.
