Paul Maze (1887-1979) French
"Trooping the Colour"
Signed, pastel, 43cm by 29.5cm

Provenance: Gifted to a god-daughter of the artist's wife

Anglo-French painter Paul Maze is arguably best known as being a close friend and artistic mentor to Sir Winston Churchill. The two men met on the Western Front in 1916 and became firm friends, partly through their shared love of painting. They often exchanged letters, and in a letter of 1936 Maze wrote to Churchill "Paint like you write or speak. You can do it - every stroke of the brush must be a statement felt and seen."
