John Miers and Studio (18th/19th century): Portrait Silhouette of Thomas Wakefield, Richmond, wearing period costume, facing right, inscribed on the silhouettist's original label Miers, Profile-Painter and Jeweller opposite Exeter Change, Strand, London …, black ink on plaster, oval, 9cm by 6.5cm; and Another of an Elegant Lady, wearing a lace bonnet, facing left, bearing silhouettist's original label for Miers and Studio, black ink on plaster, 8cm by 6.5cm, both in original verre églomisé glazed mounts (2)

Example 1 - damaged, the background cream/white plaster is crumbling at the bottom just right of centre, this damage extends for approx. 0.5-1cm and extends into the image by 0.5-1cm. Part of the gilding from the verre églomisé glazed mount is also damaged in places. In a black lacquer outer frame with wooden turned inner oval decoration. Frame dented and cracked in places, as well as stained and dirty. Example 2 - appears to be in good condition with a rather bright background. There is some dirt to the underside of the glass. The inner turned wooden frame is missing in places, with some gilding missing to the verre églomisé mount, it is also rubbed. There is some dirt to the underside of the glass. The black lacquer frame is cracked, stained and dirty.

Regarding Pictures, Prints and Works on Paper, works are not examined out of the frame, unless specifically stated. Tennants Auctioneers do not cover damage to gilded wood or plaster picture frames, or to picture frame glass whilst the item is in our possession.
