Russian Area: Civil War and Revolution, Batum, Wenden, Occupations, POs Abroad, etc.

One of the principal volumes in the collection, intact as received aside from the Western Ukraine section (see Lot 101). All pre-1945 issues, several hundred mint and used with lots of errors and unusual material, written-up in detail. Highlights are 1919 Russian occupation of Latvia with complete ovpts on national issues incl. both 10k on blue types signed (SG.23, 34, cat. £425), orthodox cross 'LP' surcharges on Russia with 70k on 15k inverted (signed several times, conflicting positions) and imperfs also signed. Then Siberia with inverted surcharges incl. perf 35k (SG.5b) and 1r (SG.8ca) with Ceresa certs, Amur tête-bêche pairs used (SG.17a, 19a, cat. £400), through to a very good range of Far Eastern Republic overprints incl. 10k (SG.23, signed), 20k (SG.26) and later inverts, followed by South Russia with a plethora of errors and varieties, leading on to extensive General Wrangel ovpts over fifteen pages, as well as Czech Legion incl. surcharge set originals (SG.9/17, cat. £350), Batum with over 30 surcharges incl. pointed 50r on perf 5k with 1994 BPA cert (SG.26, cat. £425; Sc#30, $975) and unlisted black on 2k green imperf signed, rounded types near-complete with cat. over £2,500 if genuine. Also 1941 German occ. of Pleskau surcharges on piece (Mi.3/9, €540) and Ljady surcharge MNH (all signed Rommerskirchen BPP, POs in China incl. good Harbin surcharges signed, POs in Crete incl. control marks on type without stars, POs in Turkish Empire with city ovpt errors, and much more. A very impressive album.

This is once more an exciting sale with several family estate sections which include Irish and Great Britain new issues of the 1920s carefully stored for a century, a series of specialized Eastern Europe collections with excellent Batum and German local occupations of Poland, as well as extensive Great Britain singles with much line-engraved, and through to a very solid finale of postcard collections including a wonderful subject collection with forty Louis Wain, a strong aviation collection with 300 from the 1920s onwards, a large collection of Southern counties topography and much more.
