The Casual Encounter: A Mid-18th Century Ivory Fan, the monture carved and pierced, silvered and strongly gilded. The guards feature figures and classical piercing, the gorge being divided into three vignettes, interspersed with fine vertical piercing and numerous gilded winged cherubs, several holding silver balls. The central vignette is finely carved with an 18th century couple and a winged cherub, the cherub holding a ball and the lady holding something on her knee, possibly part of a game. Two outer vignettes contain mermaids back to back. The double silk leaf, set in a clearing, shows a lady seated on a bench, dressed in a tall dark coloured and highly decorated hat, a man beside her wearing a long blue jacket and paler blue breeches. A younger lady dressed in pink and white accessories has stopped to converse. To each side, a small deep red oval plaque. To the outer edges, a dark oval painted with classical musicians in flowing white robes, and bordering all such details, tiny gold sequins. The verso is painted with sprigs of branches and leaves, one of which has a brightly coloured bird perched in the midst. Guard length 28cm
Not Sold

We cannot guarantee a reply to any requests made within 48 hours of the start of the auction. The absence of a Condition Report from a lot does not mean that the lot is in perfect condition. All lots are available on public view ahead of an auction and we encourage prospective buyers to inspect an item in person where possible. Our Condition Reports are not prepared by professional conservators, restorers, or engineers, and are prepared with the naked eye unless otherwise stated.

Regarding Pictures, Prints and Works on Paper, works are not examined out of the frame, unless specifically stated. Tennants Auctioneers do not cover damage to gilded wood or plaster picture frames, or to picture frame glass whilst the item is in our possession.
