A Derby Porcelain Botanical Fruit Cooler and Cover, circa 1790, painted with "Jacobean Amaryllis" and "Althaea Frutex" within yellow and gilt line borders, painted marks in blue, 24cm high

In 1792 correspondence from Joseph Lygo, the manager of the Derby porcelain factory's London showrooms, to William Duesbury II, the owner of the factory, refers to "Nineteen numbers of a Botanical magazine sent to Derby". It has been established that this letter refers to Curtis' Botanical Magazine published monthly from February 1787, each issue having three hand-coloured botanical engravings accompanied by descriptions and Latin and English names. These engraving became the main source for botanical decoration on Derby wares at this time
