A rare example of a George Adams "New Universal" microscope, the brass compound tube is attached to a mount above a rotating scalloped shaped plate containing a number of objective lenses. The stand has a fine adjustment and an open fret work foot, which folds for ease of transportation in a pocket.
Contained in its original leather covered case.
The live box stage is missing as are some of the objective lenses.
This design was first shown by Adams in his book of 1746 and he wrote this about it "It has been the desire of the curious and inquisitive part of mankind to have a microscope which would be portable and universal, that is to say, one only instrument by which all sorts of minute objects might be observed"
