Saint Ursula and her Virgins: An Early 18th Century Fan, with pierced ivory sticks, the guards...

Saint Ursula and her Virgins: An Early 18th Century Fan, with pierced ivory sticks, the guards intricately carved in the Chinese export style, the gorge carved and pierced in a more regular fashion. The velum leaf, mounted à l'anglaise, depicts a laden rowing boat taking to the sea, overflowing with ladies, one with a harp, others appearing to read music, one seated on an elaborately draped throne, cherubs carrying flower garlands flying above, to the right a man swimming towards the boat. To the left a helmeted horseman hurrying to the shore, the top of the leaf further painted with red drapes. This is possibly a depiction of (Saint) Ursula a princess from south-west Britain, daughter of King Dionotus of Dumnonia, heading to sea to join her future husband, the pagan governor Conan Meriadoc of Armorica, along with eleven thousand virginal handmaidens. The verso, painted a deep brown/black, is covered with vibrant painted flowers, to include roses, parrot tulips and convolvulus. Guard length 26.5cm

Sold for £950
Estimated at £700 - £900

Good colours but rubbed. Some repairs to the leaf folds and one more to do.
