The Wedgwood Plaque: An 18th Century Ivory Fan, the monture gilded and silvered, carved and pierced, simply but intricately on the upper guards, more varied by matching on the gorge sticks. The double silk leaf, with a well-dressed couple approaching perhaps Cupid and the altar of love, the lady proffering flowers. This vignette being bordered by tiny gold sequins, also benefits from a trompe l'oeil of several different objects. To the left, a blue and white oval plaque, the white in relief with two doves and olive branches, reminiscent of the Wedgwood factory, with a folding fan to the side, and a small pictorial card depicting an oriental figure with parasol in front of a pagoda. To the right, a similar blue plaque but in a much deeper hue, more items perhaps symbolic of love, amongst which are an obelisk, and a flaming torch. The verso, revealing the threads for the sequin embroidery on the recto, is painted with simple pink and blue flowers and green leaves. Guard length 28cm
Not Sold

Gilding in the gorge is quite bright, elsewhere the decoration is now dull. The leaf is slightly stained, and has had numerous folds restored from the verso. Some rubbing to folds.

We cannot guarantee a reply to any requests made within 48 hours of the start of the auction. The absence of a Condition Report from a lot does not mean that the lot is in perfect condition. All lots are available on public view ahead of an auction and we encourage prospective buyers to inspect an item in person where possible. Our Condition Reports are not prepared by professional conservators, restorers, or engineers, and are prepared with the naked eye unless otherwise stated.

Regarding Pictures, Prints and Works on Paper, works are not examined out of the frame, unless specifically stated. Tennants Auctioneers do not cover damage to gilded wood or plaster picture frames, or to picture frame glass whilst the item is in our possession.

We accept no liability for the opinions expressed in any Condition Report.
