A Mid-19th Century Chinese Carved Tortoiseshell Mandarin Fan, Qing Dynasty, the double paper leaf depicting several different scenes of social gatherings, the figures with ivory faces, their robes of applied silk. The fourteen inner sticks are densely carved on both sides with mainly flowers and foliage and some buildings, the guards being more deeply carved and with similar designs. The gold metal loop is finished with three tassels of different colour silk. The rivet has a diamanté to each side. Guard length 27cm. Together with an elaborate fan box of the period, lacquered in an unusual light coffee shade, decorated to the sides and ends with simple black foliage and flowers, the outside of the lid finely painted with two vignettes each showing three figures: in the first a figure holds a fan box, in the second a different figure holds an open fan. Inside, the fittings are missing the lid interior, lined in salmon silk, and edged with striped braid, has three appliqués, two of ladies and one of a man, each bearing a gilt, their faces of applied painted ivory, their silk robes very elaborate

Generally sound with very slight rubbing to some folds. When closed the fan can be seen to be very slightly warped. The box interior need refitting and the catch is not secure.
