A Ruby and Diamond Cluster Ring, circa 1900, the cushion mixed cut ruby within a border of nine old

A Ruby and Diamond Cluster Ring, circa 1900, the cushion mixed cut ruby within a border of nine old cut diamonds, in white claw settings on a tapered shoulder plain polished shank, total estimated diamond weight 1.35 carat approximately, finger size O, in a box by Rood

The ruby is accompanied by a laboratory report from The Gem & Pearl Laboratory, dated 19 January 2016, which describes the stone as natural ruby, no evidence of heat treatment observed, origin opinion Burma

Burmese rubies are accepted as the finest quality rubies. A fine quality ruby is generally considered to have an even colour, with a strong red fluorescence, showing a minimal amount of black, grey or brown. The large majority of these stones are from the Mogok area of Myanmar (Burma).

Sold for £23,000
Estimated at £5,000 - £7,000

The ring is in good condition. The ruby has some minor wear to the facet edges and a small chip to one facet edge. It bears no hallmark, nor stamps, but in our opinion it would test as a combination of platinum and gold. The ruby measures 7.8mm x 7.2mm x 3.7mm = 1.40 carat (very approximately). The approximate qualities of the diamonds are; colour H/I/J, clarity SI1/SI2/I1. Gross weight 3.8 grams. CR made 25th May 2016 Claws worn in places. Possibly made from something else (a stud, a button?), on a later ring mount. 190716

Our Condition Reports are not prepared by professional conservators, restorers, or engineers, and are prepared with the naked eye unless otherwise stated.

Regarding Pictures, Prints and Works on Paper, works are not examined out of the frame, unless specifically stated. Tennants Auctioneers do not cover damage to gilded wood or plaster picture frames, or to picture frame glass whilst the item is in our possession.

We accept no liability for the opinions expressed in any Condition Report.
