Attributed to Sir Thomas Lawrence PRA (1769-1830)
Portrait of a gentleman, head and shoulders, believed to be the artist John Martin (1789-1854), wearing a black jacket and white cravat
Pencil with coloured chalks, 18.5cm by 14cm

John Martin first exhibited his famous "Sadak, In search of the Waters of Oblivion" at the RA in 1812 and it is possible that Martin would have come to Lawrence's attention at this time.
By 1821 Sir Thomas Lawrence famously referred to the artist John Martin as "The most popular artist of the day".
