Sold for £4,000
Estimated at £1,200 - £1,800

Old re-line. There is re-touching to the left of the ship on the far left hand side and the masts and rigging have probably been strengthened, there is a horizontal patch of re-touching to possible old repair above the buildings on the left hand side in the sky and approx 8cm in length with further strengthening to the shadows and definition to the lower parts of the city walls. There is an old vertical tear/damage just left of centre running directly above the central sailed ship with associated re-touching, visible with the naked eye and approximately 10cm in length. Re-touching to lower edges one or two being somewhat wider and more prominent, relatively small patch of over painting/re-touching, which has been amateurishly done around the far right hand side vessel in the lower right hand side corner and left hand side. The surface is generally flat and the paint is thin in places. Originally painted on a coarse weave canvas which is partially evident, there are small losses of flaked paint and some older restorations to this are showing in an ochre coloured hue just to the right of the flags on the far right hand side, atop the buildings there is an area of restoration approx 7 by 5cm and much of this has now discoloured and deteriorated so that it is visible to the eye. Covered in a thick layer of dirt and discoloured varnish etc. Probably 18th/19th c
